I see London, I see France.......

I am taking a few minutes to post before the mayhem that is work begins. I have been so busy. Ultimately, it's a good thing. This outfit was decidedly cuter in my head than in real life but I still like it quite a bit. The skirt is dangerously short. Oops.

I'm not sure if I love the pattern of the shirt. I thought it was more of a floral but it looks a bit too abstract for me right now. I do love the combo of the "urban" earring with the cat eye glasses. Anyway, I'm off to work. By Stylish!

Make it work Mondays!

Yay! It's Monday. I'm kidding. I had a lovely weekend filled with good Friends and great food and whatnot. Needless to say, I'm not too happy to be back at the office. The good thing is that it's 'make it work Monday.' That's where I take something that I would not normally wear and Work it out.

This Monday's installment features this crazy ass belt.

It's an amazing belt. I got it at a vintage clothing swap years ago. I have always felt like it was a bit 'silly' to get away with. This is kind of ridiculous coming from the girl who just a few days ago was wearing a t-shirt featuring an octopus wearing glasses and a moustache! Still, The belt felt a bit costume to me. Maybe it's the rhinestones. Anyway, I never wear it but today is the day! This is what I did:

I like it. I think the brown works nicely with the blue and gold. I encourage you all to 'Make it work' too! It's fun!

Stay Stylish,
Onika

"I'd like to thank my studded booties....without whom none of this would be possible"

Hi. so far this weekend I've worn Yoga pants and a tank top. Uh.... Yeah. Not that stylish but whatever. A girl has got to chill. It's 7:30 on Sunday morning. It's quiet in that amazing peaceful way that makes it okay to be up at such a ridiculous hour on the weekend.

So Yay! Someone likes my blog enough to give my an award. It appears that this means that I now have to share 5 guilty Pleasures. No problem. I've got lots of those:

  1. One word: GOOP.
  2. Peanut butter and cheese sandwiches. Actually, all kinds of strange sandwiches involving peanut butter(Peanut butter and lettuce, Peanut butter and beets. Peanut butter and mayo and lettuce....the list goes on. I think peanut butter makes everything better.
  3. The food network. I don't know if this is really that 'guilty' but I think the frequency with which I watch what is essentially food porn has got to be at least a little bit guilty.
  4. Bamboo earrings. I will wear them until I die. I don't care how trendy they become. They are the perfect accessory.
  5. Facebook. I actually really kind of hate Facebook but I CANNOT stop using it. A lot.

Whew. That felt good. It was cathartic.

Now, I am supposed to nominate 5 people whose blogs I luuuuve for the award

1) Curly Top. Witty and health conscious.

2) Yes and yes. So Charming and SO witty.

3) Samantha Simple. I just starting reading this but I was instantly charmed.

4) Faboo. She looks good in BLACK LIPSTICK. I am so jealous of this. And she lives in Buffalo.

5) Bright Side Dweller. She is the sweetest.

6) Healthy and Homemade. Two of my favorite things.

I know I'm only supposed to give 5 but I couldn't do it.I would have liked to give 50 of these things there are so many well done blogs that make me want to cower with jealousy.

Thanks again Irie Chic!

Thou shalt not covet they neighbors Blog.

Oh where to begin?

I have to say that I was discouraged by yesterday's lack of comments. I have been reading all sorts of amazing blogs lately by beautiful stylish women who clearly have tons of adoring readers and I let that nasty green monster get the best of me. Jealousy is not very stylish. I tend to be hard on myself and I think that maybe I seek more approval from others than I care to admit. Has anyone else experienced this when starting a new blog? It's kind of bizarre.

So I was moping around this morning feeling fairly overwhelmed and then I got this WONDERFUL compliment from Nika who has the most daring and original style. She writes a blog called Irie Chic and she nominated me for a Blog Award! To be honest, I'm not really sure what this entails but I am sure that it rules. More on this to come. ThankYouThankYouThankYou.

Despite my case of the grumpies, I did however still manage to look super cute! Ladies and gentlemen, I give you.....THE BEST T-SHIRT EVER:

I haven't been able to wear this bad boy for a while because it is super tiny and since I've just had a baby I was not super tiny at all. It fits again which is pretty sweet(p.s.much more to come on baby weight/body acceptance later on in this blog!)

I love it paired with these glasses. I bought it at a vintage clothing show for $4. That was the best $4 I have ever spent. The rest of the outfit is nothing to write home about. I wanted to keep all the focus on the HILARITY.

I may post something else later today. I have to write about my blog award and I want to do another "style shuffle" before the week is over so keep checking in!

I have never seen Mad Men.

Mad Men seems like one of those shows that even if it weren't as good as everyone says, I would watch it just for the clothes. I love shows like that. Once someone told me that I was like "the girl on a bad sitcom that you watch anyway just to see what she's wearing". That was one of the greatest compliments I have ever gotten :) I have a small collection of 1950's 'house' dresses. at least I think they would be house dresses. I think it's so funny that when I wear one everyone thinks I am so 'fancy' when the original owner probably wore it to do the dishes or clean out the fridge or something. It is amazing how lazy we have become when it comes to style. Not that I don't like having the option of dressing down which women in the 50's didn't really have. I sometimes romanticize the 50's because in retrospect it seems so glamorous but I can't help but think sometimes of what it would be like to actually be a black woman in the 50's in North America. Probably not all that glamorous most of the time. There was really no grey area when it comes to images of black women in popular culture in the 50's it was really a whole lotta this:

or this:

Both of these women are absolutely beautiful. I just can't imagine what it would be like to have such a narrow representation of myself in mainstream culture. Sigh.

Anyhoo...back to my outfit!

There is a transformation that occurs when you put on a vintage dress which I really like. I added the glasses because I think they work so well with this dress without being too 'costumey'. I would never risk it if they were actual vintage frames but since they are a more modern shape it works. The cardigan and the pearls finished things off even better than I had hoped.

Anyway, have a great day everyone. Go call your Grandma. Or Great Grandma. I am old.
Stay Stylish!

Sex, Lies and Studded Booties.

First of all, My pictures:
They suck. I know. The thing is, when I leave for work in the morning, my husband is almost always asleep and so I don't have anyone to take pictures for me. Then when I get home, all I want to do is play with my son and cuddle with my husband so photo shoots are not exactly the first thing on my mind. I do have a camera and I am working on getting a tripod so I can do it myself. Please bear with me. I actually like the shitty Iphone pictures. I think it gives things a kind of voyeuristic vibe.

More importantly, LOOK AT THESE SHOES!!!!!

I am madly and passionately in love. Today's look is all about the shoes.

I have learned to NEVER say never when it comes to personal style-and in life in general. which brings me to leggings:

My instinct is to just say no to leggings. Leggings are NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to pull off. My thighs are not small. but all I could think of when I look at the shoes is these taupe leggings and this tunic and so I took the plunge. I LOVE IT. I think the taupe leggings make the whole look more interesting than black ones. These are my favorite earrings of all time by far. I can't say exactly why I love them so much, I just think they suit me really well. Overall I'm really in to this. I feel comfortable yet put together and I am stomping all around the office like a supermodel in my new shoes. WORK.

Bonjour. Je suis tres stylish.

I always secretly envy all of those beautiful french women who wear black all of the time. Some people can work black and neutrals so well and look so damn chic and simple. And then I come along with my neon pink nail polish and mustard yellow t-shirt and ruin it. Ohwell. It's who I am. I'm going to own it.

On that note, today's look is all black. I love this cute little dress. The detail is lost on my shitty bathroom pitures but it's a very sweet empire waist with a cute grosgrain ribbon under the bust and a nice full skirt. Of course, I had to tame the 'sweetness' of it all with this awesome necklace($3!) and leopard heels which I LOVE. I've seen a million pairs of leopard heels in my life but these are just right. I like how my hair turned out with the whole outfit as well. So I'm going to try to be as chic and aloof and 'fashiony' as I can in my all black outfit today. Aurevoire mes amis!
